Does anyone have any theories to share about why gmail is Beta after such a long time?

Is it just a gimmick?

Is it to limit it to people who "really, really want to use it"?

Is it merely a mechanism to try to defeat automatic account creation software?

Any ideas?

      Yeah, it's so that if gmail ever completley bites the dust they can say "hey, it was in beta".
