I'm hoping someone can help. I suspect my account was hacked and my password changed. I check my gmail everyday, multiple times a day, and am very clear what my user name and password are. Today I tried logging in, but got a message that the "user name and password do not match." So I tried to reset my password -- they sent instructions to my secondary email account. No email showed up in my secondary email account, and when I tried to verify my username with my secondary email I got a message that "no user name is associated with this email address," or something to that effect. I'm afraid that someone hacked my account, and changed my password and secondary email. The folks at Google have been, so far, less than helpful, but it hasn't even been 24 hours yet.

Anyway -- has this happened to anyone else? Could it possibly be a system issue and not a hacker issue? And does anyone have any suggestions for how to proceed or alert Google to the issue? I've tried filling out the "contact us" forms but they ask for all this information that, unfortunately, I can't get without accessing my gmail account.

I got the same message when trying to check my gmail account from home and from work.

i use my gmail address to subscribe to a fairly high traffic mailing list. if i don't check gmail frequently enough i seem to "lose" some of the messages within a thread. actually they are there, but because of the threading gmail only displays the most recent reply, and moreover the feature of hiding the quoted text makes it even more frustrating when trying to catch up. i have to tab through all the previous messages (and even those don't all display at once) to figure out what's going on. i feel like i'm losing either my email or my mind.

is anyone else been bothered by this? is there some usability habit that i haven't picked up on yet?

fbform writes "As reported by this article on InternetNews, when news about Google's IPO broke on March 31, 2004, some companies (Cencourse, Precision Research and ProNet Analytics) made a beeline for the USPTO to get Gmail trademarked in their name, as Google's IPO prospectus said that its unregistered trademarks included Gmail. Google itself was fourth in line, and it was followed by the Gospel Music Association. This might be a very sticky issue because USPTO Trademark Administrator Sharon Marsh says 'The application process is first come, first served. Applications are processed as they're received, and the person second in line will get a refusal of registration from our examiner.' All of which means that between Google's delay in applying for the trademark, the other organizations' attempt at what can only be called cybersquatting, and the USPTO's bureaucracy, Google could well be denied the use of Gmail as a trademark."

I will say this: it does mildly bother me how hard Google makes it to delete mail. I know they want to make it easy for folks not to HAVE to delete mail, but wow: it's a pain to delete it when you really want to. Makes me wonder why they're so eager to have you use up your space?

I assume most everyone on here has heard of http://gmailgems.blogspot.com ... if not, here's a great tip they printed a few weeks back on a work-around way to "import" your contact list:

There is a super-easy way to add your existing address book from your old email account (Yahoo, Mail, MSN, whatever) to your spiffy new Gmail contacts list. Here's what to do:

1. Email everyone on your list including yourself at your new Gmail address. Say something like: "I'm going to be switching email addresses to my new Gmail account. Expect an email from that account soon!"

2. Reply All to that email from your Gmail account. Tell everybody "This is my spiffy new Gmail account! Please email me at this address from now on."

Then everybody you emailed should be in your Gmail contacts.

BTW, importing/exporting contacts is one of the future promised features of Gmail. More info: http://www.gmailforums.com/index.php?showtopic=198
